As you probably know already, more important than the risk of chemical burns is the risk of killing off all the good bacteria. Doing so would allow all kinds of bad bacteria, and also especially yeast, to take over.
There’s a great book (out of print?) called LIFE ON MAN that discusses all the different symbiotic organisms living on humans, and the sociology of the “germ free” movement.

So, um, when were these ads published? I’m guessing early-middle Fifties, and my fiancĂ©e is guessing late Fifties.
