Solaris/OpenSolaris and Cheap PCI USB Cards

The $20 2-port PCI USB 2.0 controller I picked up from CompUSA works fine without any configuration at all in my Ultra 60, under either Solaris Express or the latest OpenSolaris build:

  1. This has been the case since Solaris 9. Although, I will say that since the early builds of Solaris 10, usb 2.0 support has gotten a lot better. I’ve had a usb 2.0 card in my ultra 10 and my current ultra60 for a while now. The only thing is that since the OBP isn’t aware of USB interfaces for keyboard/mouse, you can’t use them for console access.

  2. I don’t suppose you or anyone reading this tried a usb/firewire combo card on an Ultra 5/10? With both it and a 3rd party scsi card installed it crashes on boot or cfgadm -val. Either card works fine when the other is removed…

    Anyone got any ideas?
