Wednesday, May 18th, 2005the weekend from hell
Sunday, May 15th, 2005Friday: Arrive at work at 8:30am. Finally leave work at 11:15pm that night. It was the first stage of migrating around 600 machines from NIS name services to LDAP.
Saturday: Get up at 10:30, conference call, and work from home till 8pm, when I had to go to the office to fix a problem (didn’t have the right tools here at the house). Finally got done around 9:15pm.
Sunday: Slept until 10am, got up, conference call, things are going smoothly. Cleaned house, did laundry, changed sheets, changed the cat litter, all that fun stuff. It’s almost 10pm and I’m just *now* starting to relax for the weekend. Oh wait, the weekend’s over!
score: cat 1, me 0
Thursday, May 12th, 2005Yesterday I had to take our smallest cat back to the vet for her followup visit after being spayed. She’s been known to not like being put in a cat carrier, so on the way home I stopped by Berings, my favorite hardware store, and picked up a pair of leather work gloves. Got home, spent half an hour chasing said cat around the house, finally got hold of her (being VERY glad I had the gloves), and put her in the cat carrier.
As I took the gloves off, I noticed that my left index finger was bleeding profusely. A closer look revealed that she’d bitten through the glove and given me a pretty good puncture wound. I cleaned up and washed it off, and took her to the vet. When I walked in, they said “hey, you’re bleeding” - and I discovered that she’d gotten me pretty good on the underside of my right arm as well. I guess all the adrenaline from chasing her around the house kept me from feeling it. Ten minutes later, I’d scrubbed up with alcohol wipes and antibacterial soap, she was given a clean bill of health, and I brought her home.
Amy suggested that I go to the doctor today for antibiotics, due to the fact that cat bites and scratches can turn into nasty infected wounds. The doctor not only gave me a tetanus shot, but gave me TWO different prescriptions for antibiotics.
Total cost to get kitten spayed: $125
Total cost of the followup visit: $70 (gloves, doctor’s copay, antibiotic prescription)
Another OpenSolaris build
Monday, May 9th, 2005Sun Microsystems Inc. SunOS 5.10.1 mrbill May. 06, 2005 SunOS Internal Development: root 2005-05-06 [mrbill] bfu'ed from /opensolaris/build/archives/sparc/nightly on 2005-05-09 Sun Microsystems Inc. SunOS 5.10.1 snv_10 October 2007
This time it was snv_13 compiling itself.
Took an hour and 13 minutes longer than Solaris Express 4/05 did, for some reason.
What I Did Today
Sunday, May 8th, 2005Got up around 11am, deposited two checks at the bank (one of which was unexpected, and bigger than I thought it would be)..
Picked up a book from Borders that I ordered last Saturday, then read most of it while I got an oil change and inspection done on my truck.
Went by the lightbulb shop on Westheimer, and picked up a pair of full-spectrum compact flourescent bulbs. I put one of them in the fixture in my office, and the other in my new desk lamp. Picked up an inhaler refill and cokes and snacks at Walgreens, then later went to Kroger for cleaning supplies (the sink in the bathroom finally drains normally!). Dinner was a corndog from Sonic.
Tomorrow I have to clean house and do lots of laundry.
OpenSolaris Ahoy!

I only borked one thing during the build/install, but it was easy enough to fix by booting to single-user mode off a CD-ROM and editing files by hand.
My first (successful) OpenSolaris build
