My favorite OS X apps

Everyone’s doing it, so I’ll list my favorite OS X apps as well, the stuff I consider “essential”:

  • Desktop Manager, for multiple “virtual workspaces”
  • MenuMeters, for CPU load graphs and memory use status on the menubar
  • WeatherPop Advance, for menubar weather status
  • Temperature Monitor, to keep an eye on the guts of my MDD “Wind Tunnel” dual G4
  • NetNewsWire, my preferred RSS/RDF/Atom reader
  • FFView, the closest Mac equivalent to CDisplay for Windows that I’ve seen, for reading comic book archives
  • MissingMediaBurner, for when I need to burn some oddball CD format or make CDs/VCDs
  • SuperCal to keep my monitor nice and calibrated and sharp
  • VueScan for my flatbed scanners
  • ffmpegX for video conversion

For the iBook, I also use

Quicksilver, dude. It’s kinda like one of those launcher deals, but with so much more. I’ve been meaning to do a write-up about it, but I keep running out of time.

It’s really hard to explain why it’s so cool, so you’ll just have to trust me. It’s kinda like the Matrix. No one can tell you what Quicksilver is: you have to experience it for yourself :).
